How to Get Into an Online Business Degree Program

Getting accepted into business school is becoming more competitive every semester. In 2009, there were nearly 10,000 candidates for the 942 places at Harvard Business School, and 17 candidates for every single opening at Stanford University (as reported at Forbes). Similarly intimidating numbers have been reported at business schools across the United States.

For aspiring business students, a viable, reasonable, and affordable alternative is to look for business certificate, diploma, and degree programs online.

Accredited online business degree programs are offered by some of the top schools in the country. These schools offer business courses at various levels, from certificates to master's degrees. It is important to look not only at what you want to get out of your online business program, but also at what you should expect from the admission process.

Certificate, Diploma, and Bachelor's Degree Admission Requirements

Online business school requirements differ depending on the reputation of the school and the difficulty of the program. In general, you can expect the following educational requirements when applying for any online business degree or certificate program:

  • Proof of certification of high school graduation or high school equivalency (GED)
  • SAT/ ACT scores or successful completion of a placement test, normally offered online through your business school of choice
  • A completed online application form
  • An application fee with the submission of your application. This is usually $50-$100.
  • For students whose native language is not English, proof of English proficiency (TOEFL) is generally required
  • An admission interview arranged through your school of choice. This is usually a phone interview that will take 20-30 minutes, and will aim to ensure that your goals and expectations for the program match the standards of the school.

Master's of Business Degree Program Admissions

For online graduate business degree programs, the application guidelines are similar to those listed above, but you will most likely also need to submit a transcript indicating receipt of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. You will probably also be asked to do a telephone admission interview and an entrance examination. Some schools will also request a resume indicating your years of significant experience in business, industry, or non-profit work.

Do I Need to the Take GMAT?

The GMAT is a worldwide examination that measures your aptitude in mathematics and the English language. For most online business schools, the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is not necessary for acceptance. However, many students will choose to take the computer adaptive standardized test in order to prepare themselves for the road ahead.

Online Business Degree Admission Tips

No two business schools are the same, just as no two applicants are the same. Because of this, admission counselors say that they are looking for your personality to shine through during the application and interview process. When filling out your application and/or resume, it is okay to step outside the box and let your colors show. Furthermore, be upfront during the application interview – explain why you want a business degree and what you plan on doing with it.

There is no defined procedure when it comes to the admission process, so take your time, be completely honest and, of course, triple check all of your answers for spelling and grammatical errors before pressing the send button.
