Doctorate Degree

Most often, those with a doctorate in business go into professional careers in research, or take teaching positions at accredited universities. A Ph.D. in Business can also be sought to qualify for top executive positions in business, government, and industry. These positions regularly pay from $90,000 to $200,000 a year at highly ranked schools and companies. These positions are not available to people with just a bachelor's or master's degree: a doctorate is usually necessary for the most prestigious and highly paid positions in business.

In a doctoral program, you gain in-depth knowledge into operations management, information systems, finance, accounting, organizational behavior, marketing, and consumer behavior. This knowledge makes you valuable to many top companies, for which you can work as an executive, consultant, or researcher.

As a rule of thumb, it takes four to five years to complete a Ph.D. in business. The first few years are spent on coursework and projects, and the last two to three years are dedicated to dissertation research and writing.

Doctoral programs often offer specializations within business, and becoming well versed in a more specific area allows you to pursue careers in more narrow and specialized fields. This degree can be pursued right after having earned your bachelor's and master's, or after working for several years.
